London Dining

This section covers the full range of cafés from unreconstructed "greasy spoons", where you can get traditional fried egg, sausage and bacon English breakfasts, fish and chips, pies and other calorific treats, to the refined salons of London's top hotels, where you can enjoy an afternoon tea blowout. In between, you'll find bakeries, brasseries, sandwich bars, coffee shops and ice-cream parlours, all of which are open during the day for light snacks or just a drink. We've also included several ethnic eating places where speedy service and low prices are the priority - places perfect for an inexpensive or quick bite before going out to a theatre, cinema or club. Wherever you go, you should be able to fill up for under £10.

If you want to surf while you slurp, you'll find that London has nothing like the number and variety of Internet cafés as other capital cities. Your best bet is to head for a branch of easyInternetcafé, the no-frills Internet café chain - there's a 24hr branch just up the Strand, off Trafalgar Square. Alternatively, there's the more congenial 24hr Be the Reds! (tel 020/7209 0984) at 39 Whitfield St, just off Tottenham Court Road (Goodge Street tube) - a Korean-run place serving kimbab and coffee, with billiards in the basement.
