Montreux Dining

There are plenty of inexpensive places to eat and drink around the station on Avenue des Alpes offering meals for Fr.12-14, including some with lake-view terraces: Brasserie des Alpes, at no. 23, has pasta staples, while Restaurant City, at no. 37, and Migros, 49 Avenue du Casino, are both self-service. In the Old Town, check out the fondue and Swiss dishes at Caveau des Vignerons, 30 Rue Industrielle; or take a chance with the home-style fare - tripe, sauerkraut and all - at the local diner variously entitled La Corsaz, La Petite Brasserie Alsacienne or Le Flamm's on Rue de la Corsaz. Confiserie Zürcher, 45 Avenue du Casino (021/963 59 63), is Montreux's most venerable old tearoom (since 1894), perfectly situated with plate-glass windows for crowd-watching, a patisserie for exquisite cakey creations and a restaurant section with mid-priced menus. The most appealing place to eat is the oriental-fantasy Palais Hoggar, 14 Quai du Casino (021/963 12 71); Arabic meals start from Fr.25, with plenty for veggies, or you could just savour the lakeside views over a Moroccan mint tea. If you've got a spare Fr.150, and you've already tried out Lausanne's Rochat, take a taxi to Le Pont de Brent, in the nearby suburb of Brent (021/964 52 30), another gourmet temple with three Michelin stars (closed Sun & Mon, late July, Christmas and New Year).
